Pakistan selectors defer squad announcement

Despite an extensive meeting of the PCB's integrity committee, Pakistan's selectors failed to finalise a 15-man squad for the ODI series against New Zealand or a list of 30 probables for the 2011 World Cup. Though the board has been given till January 5 by the ICC to announce the World Cup probables, it was thought the selectors would have announced squads on Friday.

"We had lengthy discussions on performance and availability of many players," chief selector Mohsin Khan said after a meeting with fellow selectors on Friday. "We were of the opinion that since we still have a few days before the deadline for announcing the World Cup Squad it would be better to wait until there is absolute clarity from PCB on the availability for selection of certain players."

The players Khan refers to are Shoaib Malik, Kamran Akmal and Danish Kaneria. The trio appeared in front of the integrity committee on Thursday. The players submitted further documents detailing financial and property records and were spoken to individually by members of the committee.

The committee is considering whether or not to clear the players for future selection for Pakistan assignments. The three have not played for Pakistan in any format since the summer tour to England, having not been cleared for selection by the integrity committee. Though the board has made no official comment and not charged the players, it is understood it has concerns about the trio.

Accordingly, none have been picked for various squads; Kaneria was in the Test squad for the South Africa series but was prevented from travelling by the board to the UAE at the very last minute. Akmal even wrote to the ICC to ask whether he was the subject of any corruption inquiry or case and was subsequently told there was nothing on him.

The announcement of both squads has now been deferred till early next week.

On Thursday, the integrity committee also spoke with Yasir Hameed. The opener apologised to the board over his conversation with an undercover reporter in September during a sting operation conducted by News of the World, where he was recorded talking about the three players - Salman Butt, Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Amir - suspected of being involved in spot-fixing. Hameed hasn't been part of the national team since that tour of England.

"I was trapped into it but I should not have said all that before a stranger and I apologise to all the players who were hurt because of that," Hameed told AFP.

During the course of the video, Hameed discussed the fall-out of the spot-fixing controversy, the Sydney Test and Hameed's claim that a bookie approached him during the 2004 Champions Trophy in England.

Afridi, Younis to appear before ICC tribunal

Shahid Afridi and Waqar Younis have been asked to appear before the ICC's Anti-Corruption Tribunal hearing the case of the three Pakistan players who have been accused of spot-fixing.

"Both of them will appear before the ICC Tribunal either in person or through teleconference depending on their convenience and subject to their professional commitments," the PCB said in a statement.

Afridi, Pakistan's limited overs captain, will not be involved in the Test matches in New Zealand, which coincide with the January 6-11 hearings. Younis, the Pakistan coach, will be in New Zealand.

Though there was no further comment from the PCB or ICC, ESPNcricinfo understands the players' lawyers had been informed of the development. The pair will appear, effectively, as witnesses for the prosecution.

It is likely the pair will be asked about statements they had made to the ICC's Code of Conduct Commission during Pakistan's series with South Africa in the UAE recently . Those comments appeared in Pakistani press last week; Younis is quoted as saying that Mohammad Amir's infamous no-ball during the Lord's Test had surprised him "greatly" because it was very different from his normal delivery stride. He said he'd taken up the issue with the bowler, only for the then captain, Salman Butt, to intervene before Amir could reply.

Afridi was also questioned and subsequently quoted in the report on his thoughts about the three players.

The hearing, which will be held in Doha from January 6 to 11, will determine the fate of Salman Butt, Mohammad Amir and Mohammad Asif. All three have denied their involvement in any spot-fixing.

Haddin backs Clarke as captain

Brad Haddin spent his first full day as Australia's vice-captain insisting Michael Clarke, his new master, is the right man for the top job. A new cricket leader is usually a time for celebration in this country, but Clarke's appointment for Monday's fifth Ashes Test at the SCG has been greeted with extreme caution.

Ricky Ponting is missing the match due to a broken finger and Clarke enters the fixture in poor form and with only pockets of public support. None of that matters to Haddin, who says the team is 100% behind the leader.

"He is ready to do this job," Haddin said at the SCG. "He'd be excited about the prospect of captaining Australia and he will do a very, very good job. We're 100% behind him and, being a good mate of mine, I'll support him in any way I can. He deserves to be in this position ... he's the best man for the job."

Haddin, 33, said the public reaction to all the Australian players changed from week to week. However, Clarke's rating among large sections of the community, particularly in his home state of New South Wales, has been more consistent. His lack of runs in the series - 148 in eight innings - hasn't helped endear Clarke to the detractors and the lukewarm response adds to the pressure on the country's 43rd Test captain.

"You are one good innings away, or sometimes one good cover drive away, from the support being with you," Haddin said. "Michael is a very strong character so things will be okay. He has got a very good cricket brain and you saw that through the T20 World Cup [when Australia made the final]. He thinks a lot about the game, he is going to do a very good job."

Haddin, who hopes his elevation is temporary, has played 31 Tests since replacing the retired Adam Gilchrist in the middle of 2008. He has leadership experience with New South Wales and gets a close-up view of the game as wicketkeeper. It will be interesting to watch how he juggles his post as one of the team's verbal enforcers with his new responsibilities.

Melbourne hangover sorted out - Swann

Graeme Swann insists there will be no hangover from England's Ashes-retaining heroics in Melbourne as they eye a first series win in Australia in 24 years. The tourists partied hard after holding on to the trophy at the MCG but Swann, who details some of the exploits in his latest video diary, said everyone had re-focused on finishing the Test campaign on a high.

"It's been sorted out already," Swann said after training at the SCG. "We haven't had celebrations going on for many days. We had one night out after the game, you should celebrate a Test victory and an Ashes-retaining victory heavily. I tried to a lead a merry dance, but that was one night and we've moved on."

England will face an unfamiliar Australian line-up after the captain Ricky Ponting was ruled out with a broken finger. That has provided Michael Clarke with his first game in charge and Usman Khawaja, the No.3, and Michael Beer, the spinner, are both expected to debut. It should mean that England have a huge advantage with all their experience, but Swann remains wary of so many news faces.

"On one hand there is a whole pile of pressure on them because it is a New Year's Test match and they will be shaking like big dogs, but on the other hand coming in for your first game can be the best time you ever play because you don't know what it is all about," he said. "You've not got the pressure on your back ... You have to hope it goes the first way as you don't want two people on debut and one getting a five-for and the other a hundred."

Pallekele International Cricket Stadium, one of Sri Lanka's three venues being developed for next year's World Cup, is the ground organisers are most confident about, in terms of how the pitch will behave and completing the construction sufficiently in time. "We have no fears," Suraj Dandeniya, director of the World Cup secretariat, said, "because we are playing matches, we are playing South Africa, New Zealand, all those matches, so it is 100% sure that the pitch is complete."

Getting to the stadium involves a lovely half-hour drive from the city of Kandy. You get to take in the two-century old man-made Kandy Lake, which is the centerpiece of the city, before moving along to some twisty Hill Country streets. Next up on the ride is the bridge across the majestic Mahaweli river, the largest in the country, followed by a canopied stretch past the Sri Lankan International Buddhist Academy before turning into the plush-looking Kandy Industrial Park a few kilometers ahead where the ground is located.

There's still no sign of the stadium, and after a short walk up a dusty path (the security guard assures you the ground is at the end of it), the first thing you notice is the cling-clang of construction work before seeing metal scaffolding, the barebones of a three-storey structure and plenty of men in hard hats. Get closer to the construction, and there's a massive arc of mud to the left, suitable perhaps for a dirt-bike race. This place is going to host World Cup matches, you wonder.

Hussey focused on main events

Six months ago Michael Hussey highlighted three events in his diary that he was desperate to play in. He has ticked off the World Twenty20, which Australia lost in the final to England, and is in the process of readjusting for the Ashes in November and next year's World Cup.

After Hussey's list was made a Test series against India was added to the schedule, increasing the workload and meaning players appearing in all the game's forms will be attempting to peak over an eight-month period. Hussey is part of all three units but some of his team-mates rate his fitness so highly they think he could play on for years.

An India tour before an Ashes campaign isn't ideal due to the contrasting conditions, but Hussey has found some common themes between the contests. "As batsmen we'll be tested against spin - and Harbhajan Singh," he said. "It's good preparation for facing Graeme Swann. Also, the Indians use reverse-swing very well, that's something England are really trying to perfect. In that sort of respect it will be excellent preparation."

ICC to inspect pitches for World Cup

The ICC's pitch consultant, Andy Atkinson, will be visiting India in early September to inspect six out of the eight venues in the country for the 2011 World Cup. Among the six is the Feroz Shah Kotla in Delhi, the host for the controversial India-Sri Lanka ODI in December 2009 which was abandoned due to an unfit pitch.

"Atkinson is on a week-long visit in the first week of September to inspect six out of eight World Cup match hosting centres in India," Ratnakar Shetty, the BCCI's chief administrative officer, said.

Mohali and Nagpur are the venues Atkinston will not be visiting. "He would be visiting the other six centres (Delhi, Kolkata, Bangalore, Chennai, Mumbai and Ahmedabad). Anyway barring Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata, the other centres are to host international matches against Australia and New Zealand and we would know their preparedness," Shetty said. "Mumbai, Kolkata and Delhi would host some first-class games before the World Cup."

Two of Canada's matches will be played in World Cup venues, the Jamtha International Stadium in Nagpur and the historic Bombay Gymkhana ground, while eight games will be against strong Indian domestic opposition.

The majority of the squad who played the ODIs against Ireland earlier this year will tour but John Davison (work) and Geoff Barnett (work) will join for the final fixtures while Henry Osinde (school) will join midway through. Rizwan Cheema, Khuram Chohan and Hamza Tariq are having to remain in Toronto until their visas are granted. Umar Bhatti is the only one unable to attend due to an injury to his lower leg.

The trip gives Canada a chance to train in the diverse conditions they will confront at the World Cup in February next year, hosted jointly by India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. Ingleton Liburd, Canada's head of cricket, thinks the experience will be vital for the tournament.

"Our commitment is to ensure that the team has every available resource is put into supporting our team ahead of the World Cup," he said.

Cricket Canada's President, Ranjit Saini, was understandably excited to have secured the tour and was grateful for the assistance of the BCCI in making it possible. "BCCI and its member associations have been generous and kind in giving access to good venues and arranging quality teams to play against in an exceptionally busy domestic season," he said. "The spirit of cooperation and the willingness to help has been exceptional."

Rankin on course for World Cup

Boyd Rankin, the Ireland fast bowler, is confident he is on track to take his place at the World Cup as he recovers from a stress fracture of his foot.

Rankin missed Ireland's recent trip to India, but is aiming to resume bowling in early December and work his way back to top gear early in the New Year. He is key to Ireland's hopes of making an impact at the 2011 World Cup to match their exploits in the Caribbean where they reached the Super Eight stage with victory over Pakistan and later beat Bangladesh.

"I started running in the last couple of days and should be bowling again next week when I go to Loughborough and it will be two weeks there, a week at Warwickshire and another week at Loughborough before Christmas to make sure I am as best prepared as I can be," Rankin told the Belfast Telegraph. "But this time we are taking it more slowly to make sure there are no more problems."

India need a settled side to win World Cup - Kapil

Kapil Dev has said MS Dhoni's team has the ability to win the World Cup in 2011 but will have to ensure that it finds a settled combination and keep its bowlers free of injuries. In an exclusive interview with ESPNcricinfo, Kapil, who was captain when India won the World Cup in 1983, said too many changes taking place before the World Cup could harm the team's thinking.

"They have maturity, ruthlessness, they have talent and ability," he said of the team, but added, "too many injuries are taking place." Their key focus, he said, should be on improving fielding and running between wickets.

One reason for the bowlers' frequent injuries was, he felt, that their training was not suited for their skill. Kapil said he spent time through his 15-year career working on his legs. "The gym is good enough for batsmen and other kinds of bowlers. But for the fast bowler, someone who has to bowl day in and day out , around 10 to 20 overs, you need strong legs.

UDRS can be used in bilateral ODI series - ICC

The ICC has extended the use of the Umpire Decision Review System (UDRS) to bilateral one-day internationals to help teams get used to the technology ahead of the 2011 World Cup in India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. The system has been used in Tests since 2008, and the board has already approved its use in the World Cup, along with Hot Spot, the imaging technology, which will used for the semi-finals and finals.

However, the use of UDRS in the World Cup does not mean it will continue following the event. The ICC cricket committee will evaluate its long-term use only after the World Cup. While several international teams and captains have called for the UDRS to be implemented uniformly, and come out in strong support of the system, India have not warmed to it. India have played a series in which the UDRS was used only once - in Sri Lanka in 2008 and struggled with their referrals on that tour.

Since then the UDRS has been used in Australia, South Africa, England, New Zealand and West Indies and has found favour with several captains and players. The Indians and the BCCI, however, are firmly opposed to the system, even though the ICC have approved its use in principle during the 2011 World Cup.

Officials of the Indian cricket board agreed to take a closer look at the UDRS system and how it worked, and are scheduled to watch the system in action at some point during the ongoing Ashes series. ICC chief executive Haroon Lorgat announced in October that he "had agreed with Cricket Australia to attend the Ashes matches ... with representatives of the BCCI, to understand the successful application of the technology and its contribution to correct umpiring decisions."

Hosts to play World Cup knockouts at home

The three teams jointly hosting the 2011 World Cup - Sri Lanka, India and Bangladesh - will get to play their knockout matches, should they make it that far, at home venues irrespective of where they finish in their group. However, if two of the host nations draw each other in the knockout stages, the team placed higher in the pre-tournament seeding - frozen about a year ago - will get preference.

If, for example, India make it to the quarters, they will play their match in Ahmedabad (one of the four venues) even if they draw Sri Lanka because India were better placed better when the teams were seeded. With the final scheduled in India, it ensures they will play at home in whatever knockout matches they qualify for.

Sri Lanka will play India away, but Bangladesh and other teams at home. Bangladesh will play away if they are to draw any other host nation in the quarter-finals, but will get a home game if they are playing any other team.

These rules imply that the match schedule for the knockout stages will not be known until the fate of the three host teams becomes clear. An ICC source said that the knockout schedule, as it is planned, has the potential to affect the tournament's logistics and other organisational aspects. "The knockout stages can't be sorted out until the last group game, which is India versus West Indies in Chennai on March 20. Everything will be clear only after that," the source said.

Two of the four quarter-finals are scheduled to be played in Mirpur, and one each in Ahmedabad and Colombo. If all three hosts make it to the quarters, and don't draw each other, the scheduling will be simple: India's match in Ahmedabad, Sri Lanka's in Colombo, Bangladesh's in Mirpur, and the fourth quarter in Mirpur as well.

Afridi plays down World Cup hopes

Shahid Afridi, Pakistan's ODI captain, has said Pakistan does not have high expectations for the World Cup since their preparations have been hampered by the spot-fixing allegations against a number of their players.

"I am not 100 % satisfied with the team's preparations for the World Cup," Afridi told AFP. "We've had problems on every tour, and although there aren't high expectations [of winning the World Cup], as captain I'm positive and will keep on motivating the team."

His comments came one day after manager Intikhab Alam said Pakistan was capable of winning the World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by Bangladesh, India and Sri Lanka from February 19 to April 2, 2011.

The trio of Salman Butt, Mohammad Aamer and Mohammad Asif have been suspended by the ICC over charges of spot-fixing that arose on Pakistan's tour of England in August. On their subsequent tour of the United Arab Emirates to play South Africa, Pakistan seemed to have regained some form levelling the ODI series 2-2. But on the eve of the deciding game, wicketkeeper Zulqarnain Haider fled to England, due to alleged threats to his life from bookmakers, and has since retired from international cricket. Pakistan ended up losing the game.

For Pakistan's upcoming tour of New Zealand, wicketkeeper Kamran Akmal and Shoaib Malik have been left out of the Twenty20 and Test series after the PCB did not clear them, and Afridi said he did not know why they were not included.

Gambhir ton seals series win against shaky New Zealand

New Zealand's one-day woes continued into a ninth straight game as their batting failed to cope with moist early-morning conditions in Vadodara. Zaheer Khan, coming back after injury, and Munaf Patel swung and seamed the ball all right, but New Zealand will look back at how unremarkable their response was. With the pitch easing out in the afternoon, Gautam Gambhir made the chase look ridiculously easy, becoming only the eighth captain to score centuries in back-to-back ODIs.

From the time he won the toss and put New Zealand in, Gambhir hardly put a foot wrong, keeping his perfect captaincy record and India's unbeaten home season intact. New Zealand's openers gifted their wickets, the middle order went into a shell, and even though James Franklin and Nathan McCullum added 94 for the eighth wicket, it was never going to be enough. Not with Gambhir making room and peppering the off side with drives and cuts, bringing up his fifty in 30 balls, out of India's 64 then.

Watching Gambhir bat, the struggle New Zealand went through early in the morning seemed far away. Brendon McCullum, making a comeback himself, laid out a welcome mat for Zaheer, guiding a widish delivery straight to second slip. Martin Guptill ran himself out soon after.

Between those dismissals, Williamson set the template for the day. His front foot went across to the first ball he faced. It swung in enough down the leg side to be called a wide, but Williamson had fallen over trying to correct the movement. Neither Williamson nor Ross Taylor could get rid of that tendency during their short stays. Taylor's wicket, though, came in a tame fashion as he tried drive Zaheer on the up. The shot was played away from his body, and an inside edge ensued.

Taylor's No. 4 position has been a matter of debate, with arguments that he should take more responsibility and bat at No. 3. Williamson's inability to counterattack only seemed to highlight that notion. For the third game running, he got off to a slow start, and did little to hit Munaf off his plan.

CSA apologises to Herschelle Gibbs

Cricket South Africa has apologised to Herschelle Gibbs for prematurely announcing that his contract was terminated.

CSA had issued a release on Friday saying that they had cancelled Gibbs' contract "by mutual agreement." At the time, Gibbs' lawyer Peter Whelan was waiting for the board's legal representative to get in touch with him in order to discuss the matter. They have since met and Whelan confirmed to ESPNcricinfo that the contract has now been terminated. "Herschelle did a settlement with CSA, the terms of which are confidential. We can say that there was no bad faith from CSA. It was in everybody's interests."

Whelan rejected claims that Gibbs had breached his contract as "just rumours". A source on Friday said that Gibbs had fallen foul of the administration after violating the terms "on various grounds," in his tell-all autobiography, To the Point. The book, which sold out its first print run of 15,000 copies in five days, made damning claims against the national team, detailing how it was run by a clique of senior players comprising Graeme Smith, Mark Boucher, Jacques Kallis and AB de Villiers. Gibbs had also said former coach Mickey Arthur had been a puppet and revealed details of sexual debauchery, particularly on the 1997-98 tour to Australia.

CSA asked its legal counsel to look into allegations made in the book shortly after its release but would not be drawn on whether the findings of their investigation led to Gibbs' contract being cancelled. "Because of the sensitivity of the matter as well as the confidentiality agreements signed between the parties, the matter is now closed and there will be no further comments from the parties concerned," Gerald Majola, the CSA chief executive, said in a statement.

World Cup or bust, says Jacob Oram

Jacob Oram, the New Zealand allrounder, has said that the hope of participating in the 2011 World Cup is motivating him to continue his injury-ridden career but failure to make the squad for the tournament could prompt him to retire. Oram is presently recovering from a knee surgery he had in September.

"I remember talking to Shane Bond prior to his retirement, when he had that abdominal strain, and he told me that, for him, that was the one injury too many," Oram told the Sunday Star Times. "I think I'm at that point and in that mindset right now.

"I'm very highly motivated to go to the World Cup and if it wasn't on I may have already hung the boots up by now. It's a very big carrot for me and it may also be the swan song of my career. If that's to be the case, I'd like to give it everything to try and make it."

Oram's career has been interrupted by injuries to his knee, back, calf and Achilles tendon. In August, he suffered a recurrence of a patella-tendon injury during the tri-series in Sri Lanka and had surgery for it on September 2. He will not be fully fit in time for New Zealand's Twenty20 matches against Pakistan before the year ends though he hoped to ease back into action around Christmas for Central Districts during the HRV Cup, New Zealand's domestic Twenty20 competition.

Swann bowls England to innings victory

ngland have one hand on the Ashes after Graeme Swann bowled them to victory with a five-wicket haul in Adelaide, where neither rain nor the lower order could save Australia on the fifth morning. The significance of the win cannot be underestimated, as it gives England a 1-0 advantage heading in to the third Test in Perth, which starts in a week and a half.

The triumph came when Swann turned a ball through the gate to bowl Peter Siddle, completing his five-for and confirming the margin of an innings and 71 runs. It was a devastating morning for Australia, who began the day hopeful that they could survive for a draw with six wickets in hand, but it took England less than 90 minutes to skittle the remaining Australians.

Last time England took a series lead in Australia, it was 1986-87, and they did not give it away. And as the holders of the urn, Andrew Strauss and his men will retain the Ashes unless Australia can win at least two of the remaining three Tests, a monumental task given that they have now gone five Tests without tasting victory, stretching back to the series against Pakistan in England.

New Zealand need to kick the losing habit

August 10, 2010. The day New Zealand last won an international match. As much as winning, losing is a habit too, and New Zealand desperately need to get out of that rut. Dead rubber? Not for them.

What is worse than having lost the series in the first three matches is that they have never looked like winning any of the games. The only positive is, they know why they are not winning, and where they need to improve. Their bowlers haven't looked like getting past the Delhi duo of Gautam Gambhir and Virat Kohli, who have scored 534 runs off 518 balls between them in three ODIs. The batsmen have been directionless: openers fail, middle order goes nowhere, and Scott Styris is left with too much to do. It hasn't helped that they have been without their regular opening pair of Brendon McCullum and Jesse Ryder.

Somehow, though, New Zealand need to find a way to get that winning feeling back against an India side that, on current form and confidence, will be backing itself to go unbeaten through the home season of 2010-11. It will be interesting if New Zealand can get Gambhir and Kohli out cheaply, and test the largely untroubled middle order so far. Daniel Vettori will tell his bowlers that's not asking for a lot.

Unexpected reversals leave IPL preparations in disarray

The BCCI has convened a special general body meeting (SGM) in Mumbai on Saturday to discuss the reappointment of the board's disciplinary committee. The tenure of the committee, which is investigating the conduct of former IPL chairman Lalit Modi, expired at September's annual general body meeting. The board, however, failed to reappoint or reconstitute it, technically stripping it of its existence. The BCCI secretary N Srinivasan told PTI news agency that the reappointment of the committee was "a minor thing" which had been pointed out by Modi's lawyer, Mehmood Abdi last month.

The SGM, ostensibly to tackle a "minor" issue, will be held in the backdrop of several major, unexpected reversals for a board that is usually used to getting its own way. One of the BCCI's more serious challenges is the stuttering preparation for IPL 2011.

The past six months have been dogged by the controversial termination of two franchises (Rajasthan Royals and the Kings XI Punjab), and a protracted ownership-pattern dispute over a third, (the new Kochi franchise). As a result of the controversies, the player auction has been delayed by several months and going by the BCCI's legal battles, could well be held in the middle of the 2011 World Cup.

The confusion over the eventual number of teams that will be involved next season affects every component of the world's most lucrative domestic league: its teams/ franchises, its players and its very structure. IPL 2011 now faces several scenarios:

If both expelled teams take part in the player auction, it will become much harder to prevent them at a later date from playing in the IPL, as any players who sign with them would then be left without a team.

Razzak's four secures comfortable win

Mid-way through an overcast morning, Bangladesh were in a familiar predicament: the top-order had failed and Shakib Al Hasan, the reluctant captain, was saddled with the responsibility of achieving a target his spinners could defend on a pitch that assisted turn. Having had ample practice at this challenge, Shakib went about it manfully, but he also had an able ally. His risk-free batting was at odds with Mushfiqur Rahim's impish stroke play but their 116-run stand was the bedrock of the highest total of the series. It proved more than enough.

Shakib waited only three overs before entrusting the defence of 246 to a spinner. He had to wait only three balls to see that decision yield results. Abdur Razzak continued his torment of Zimbabwe in this series: his quick strikes decapitated the chase, his economy brought it to a standstill and Bangladesh were assured of a 2-1 lead by the time the mandatory Powerplay was over.

The heart of the victory lay in the way Bangladesh, for the second time in succession, batted satisfactorily. They didn't begin in that manner, though, and were 71 for 4 in the 20th over, when Shakib and Mushfiqur began their alliance. The Zimbabwe spinners had tightened the tourniquet on the run-flow and Shakib had been watchful - a back-foot cut through point would be his only boundary for 54 balls. Little Mushfiqur, in contrast, was anything but watchful at the start of his innings, slicing Prosper Utseya just wide of the fielder at point before dispatching the next ball to the midwicket boundary with a dismissive swat.

India to practice on bouncy pitches

The India Test squad, whose advance party arrives in South Africa on Monday evening, will prepare for their three-Test series by training on "hard, bouncy pitches with no lateral movement" to simulate conditions they expect to find through the series, particularly in Centurion, venue of the first Test. Their training will take place at the Gary Kirsten Performance Zone Academy in Cape Town.

"We received a brief to prepare pitches that are similar to the Centurion surface," Martin Brand, the patron for the Claremont Cricket Club where the academy is, told ESPNcricinfo.

As India will have no warm-up matches before the first Test, their coach Gary Kirsten has been keen to get the players practicing on South Africa's bouncy wickets to prepare them for the barrage of short balls expected from the home-team bowlers. India are expected to spend a week working in the academy to improve their record in South Africa, where they are yet to win a series and have won only a single Test in 12 attempts since 1992.

The first batch of players to arrive in Cape Town will be Virender Sehwag, Cheteshwar Pujara, Umesh Yadav and Jaidev Unadkat, and the training will begin on Tuesday afternoon. "More groups of players will arrive after that and they have requested morning sessions on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday," Brand said. "We expect the full Test squad to be here by Friday and they will all have a final net session on Saturday." Friday's session will also include intensive fielding drills.

Ijaz Ahmed jnr takes Faisalabad to their first win

After an early scare, Faisalabad picked up their first points of the season, beating Multan by five wickets at the Bahawal Stadium in Bahawalpur. Set 126 to win, Faisalabad found themselves at 10 for 3 after fast bowler Abdur Rauf dismissed Shahid Siddiq caught behind for nought, and his new-ball partner Mudassar Ali got both Farrukh Shehzad and Asif Hussain in similar fashion for one run each. Faisalabad captain Ijaz Ahmed jnr calmed the situation as he put together 73 for the fourth wicket with wicketkeeper Mohammad Salman. Ijaz reached his half-century and then finished the match in style, with a six. Faisalabad moved up to eighth in the table, while Multan are stuck at the bottom with no points from eight games.

Habib Bank Limited were on the verge of a win against Zarai Taraqiati Bank Limited at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium despite the Pakistan opener Yasir Hameed's 171. While Hameed held up one end for ZTBL, legspinner Danish Kaneria, who has been left out of Pakistan's Test squad for their tour of New Zealand, kept picking up wickets at the other, finishing with figures of 8 for 99, and ZTBL were bowled out for 361. Hameed, who started the day on 88 carried his bat but received inadequate support from the other end, with captain Imran Nazir's 51 the second-highest score for ZTBL. Ahmed Shehzad's 45 helped HBL reach 80 for 1 by the end of the day, leaving them 100 to win on the last day.

State Bank of Pakistan suffer first defeat of the season

Khan Research Laboratories capitalised on State Bank of Pakistan's second-innings collapse in Rawalpindi to hand them their first defeat of the season, which however did not affect their standing at the top of the table. Resuming their second innings at 45 for 3, SBP were tormented by the incisive KRL attack, with opening bowlers Yasir Arafat and Mohammad Irfan finishing with three wickets each. Rameez Alam's 34 was the highest score and only two other batsmen managed to get into the 20s, as SBP stuttered to 134. Chasing 95 for the victory, former Pakistan opener Ali Naqvi struck a quick half-century to take KRL to their third win in six matches.

Quetta were involved in a grim battle to avoid an innings defeat against Abbottabad at stumps on the third day at the Abbottabad Cricket Stadium. Wajid Ali, who was on 115 overnight, progressed to an unbeaten 201 to set up the home side's first-innings lead of 254. Number nine batsman Junaid Khan added to Quetta's woes with an innings of 70 off 57 balls, adding 134 runs with Wajid. Quetta's quest for a draw was led by Taimur Ali's dogged unbeaten half-century, but a steady loss of wickets at the other end meant they finished at 167 for 5, needing a further 87 to erase the deficit.

Lahore Ravi were bowled out for 251 in their second innings at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore, leaving Karachi Whites requiring 121 runs to get for victory on the final day. Resuming at 9 for 0, the home side improved on their first-innings performance, but could not take the game away from Karachi. Openers Mohammad Saad and Junaid Jan made half-centuries to set them up, but there was little of note from the rest. Misbah recalled because Younis unavailable - Mohsin

Pakistan recalled Misbah-ul-Haq to the Test side and installed him as captain primarily because Younis Khan was not cleared for selection by the PCB, the chief selector Mohsin Khan has said.

"We needed a senior player to strengthen our batting line-up," Mohsin told the News. "Our first choice was Younis Khan but we didn't get any clearance [from the PCB], after which we discussed the option of recalling Misbah and decided to go for it."

Another factor that went in Misbah's favour was his non-controversial record and fitness, despite being 36. "In a team where many of the players have had serious disciplinary problems, Misbah is one guy who has a neat and clean background," Mohsin said. "He is a thorough professional and one of the fittest players in our country, which is another big plus point.

"I know that Misbah has just managed to score runs on and off in his international career but he is the kind of player who can click anytime. He has done well in the Pentangular Cup and the National One-Day Cup which is a good sign."

Pakistan had dropped both Misbah and Younis following the winless tour of Australia in 2009-10. While Misbah was cast aside because of poor form, Younis was banned along with several other Pakistan players on disciplinary grounds. Younis appealed against his punishment, like the others did, and was cleared as well, but the PCB have not picked him in the squad since.

Misbah's appointment and Younis' omission was criticised by some former Pakistan players. "Younis' omission is a case of ego problem," former selector Iqbal Qasim told AFP. "Not selecting him despite his ban (being) overturned is (an) injustice and is definitely a loss to the team. This can only happen in Pakistan that a player who was not in the team is given the captaincy besides being recalled after a gap."

"Why did they drop Misbah if he was able enough to lead the team," former legspinner Abdul Qadir said. "But since there are previous examples of players appointed captains from nowhere, we will have to accept it."

Misbah will lead Pakistan in the two-Test series against South Africa in Abu Dhabi in November. He becomes the fourth man, after Mohammad Yousuf, Shahid Afridi and Salman Butt, to captain Pakistan in Tests in 2010 alone.

The spectacular arrival of Virender Sehwag was bound to inspire others to bat with the same mindset. But the odds of a clone emerging from the backwaters of Jharkhand, whose state side has consistently scraped the bottom, was highly remote. That was until Mahendra Singh Dhoni arrived. He can be swashbuckling with the bat and secure with the wicketkeeping gloves. His neck-length hair adds to his dash. Though Dhoni made his first-class debut in the 1999-2000 season, it was only in 2004 that he became a serious contender for national selection with some stirring performances when the occasion demanded - a rapid hundred which helped East Zone clinch the Deodhar Trophy and an audacious 60 in the Duleep Trophy final. But it was with his two centuries against Pakistan A, in the triangular tournament in Kenya, that he established himself as a clinical destroyer of bowling attacks. In just his fifth one-dayer, against Pakistan at Vishakapatnam, he cracked a dazzling 148 - putting even Sehwag in the shade - and followed that up with a colossal 183 not out at Jaipur against Sri Lanka in November, when he broke Adam Gilchrist's record for the highest score by a wicketkeeper in ODIs.

Yuvraj Singh

Yuvraj Singh (born 12 December 1981 in Chandigarh, India) is the son of former Indian fast bowler and Punjabi movie star Yograj Singh. He has been a member of the Indian cricket team since 2000 (ODIs) and played his first Test match in 2003. He is the current vice captain of the ODI team. At the 2007 World Twenty20 he hit six sixes in an over against England's Stuart Broad - a feat only performed three times previously in any form of senior cricket, and never previously in an international match between two Test cricket nations.
Yuvraj is primarily a left-handed batsman but can bowl part-time left-arm orthodox spin. He is regarded as being a better player of fast bowling than spin bowling, and cites the Indian Oil Cup 2005 as a turning point in his career. He is one of the better fielders in the Indian team, fielding primarily at point, with a good aim at the stumps.

Kamran Akmal began his career at the age of 15 as a wicketkeeper and a hard-hitting opening batsman. . A string of good performances earned him a spot for Pakistan A in 2002, and after impressing against Sri Lanka A he won selection for the Zimbabwe tour in preference to the veteran Moin Khan. Brendon Barrie McCullum (born 27 September 1981 in Dunedin) is a New Zealand international cricketer, who plays for the Otago Volts at provincial level. He is a wicket-keeper, as well as an aggressive batsman who opens in One-day Internationals and is known for his fast scoring rate. His brother Nathan McCullum is also a first-class and international cricketer at provincial level, and their father Stu McCullum was a long-serving first-class player for Otago.

Both Brendon and Nathan attended King's High School, Dunedin.

McCullum also plays for Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League. He scored 158 not out in the inaugural match of the competition on 18 April 2008. The innings is currently the world highest score by a batsman in a Twenty20 match.
He also has the amazing ability to play the 'ramp shot', which involves the batsmen squatting down and scooping deliveries back over the wicketkeepers head. Virender Sehwag (born 20 October 1978, in Delhi, India), ffectionately known as Viru, is one of the leading batsmen in the Indian cricket team. Sehwag is an aggressive right-handed opening batsman and an occasional right-arm off-spin bowler. He played his first One Day International in 1999 and joined the Indian Test cricket team in 2001. In April 2009, Sehwag became the only Indian to be honored as the Wisden Leading Cricketer in the World for his performance in 2008,subsequently becoming the first player of any nationality to retain the award for 2009.Sehwag holds multiple records including the highest score made by an Indian in Test cricket (319), which was also the fastest triple century in the history of international cricket (reached 300 off only 278 balls) as well as the fastest 250 by any batsman (in 207 balls against Sri Lanka on 3 December, 2009 at the Brabourne stadium in Mumbai). In the fourth Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia, Tendulkar surpassed Australia's Allan Border to become the player to cross the 50-run mark the most number of times in Test cricket history, and also the second ever player to score 10 Test centuries against Australia, after only Sir Jack Hobbs of England more than 70 years previously.Tendulkar passed 30,000 runs in international cricket on 20 November 2009, and has been honoured with the Padma Vibhushan award, India's second highest civilian award, and the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award, India's highest sporting honor. Tendulkar became the first sportsperson and the first personality without an aviation background to be awarded the honorary rank of Group Captain by the Indian Air Force.He won the 2010 Sir Garfield Sobers trophy for cricketer of the year at the ICC awards.
